When looking to add new trees to your property, it is important to choose species that are compatible with your landscaping. One of the most important aspects of tree compatibility is water. Not only do you want to ensure your trees are properly watered, you want to make sure they are not over-water, nor subjected to water conditions they cannot withstand. This includes flooding.
If you have a lot that tends to flood easily, it is wise to opt for flood resistant tree species. Such species will better tolerate standing water and floodwaters, without drowning or becoming sodden, and therefore, survive for years to come.
Continue reading to learn some recommendations for flood resistant trees that are compatible with Indiana’s hardiness zones.
A Reminder About Hardiness Zones
Here in Indiana, our hardiness zones are 5b, 6a, and 6b. Since out state falls within more than one zone, so be sure you know exactly where you live. If you choose a tree that is not well-suited for your hardiness zone, you can expect it to have problems with growth and sustainability.
Water Tolerance in Trees
A water tolerant, or flood-resistant, tree will be able to withstand, and ultimately, survive, the conditions it is exposed to standing water over a period of time. Examples of such trees that are compatible with Indiana hardiness zones include River Birch, Weeping Willow, Bald Cypress, and believe it or not, Red Maple. Additional water tolerant tree species to consider include Hackberry, Black Tupelo, American Sweetgum, and Overcup Oak.
Recommended Species for Indiana
❦ River Birch (Betula nigra) – Appositely named, this tree is found growing naturally along the banks of rivers. Not only is it water-tolerant, it is also resistant to birch borers, and grows quite rapidly during peak season.
❦ Weeping Willow (Salix babylonica) – As one of the most common water-tolerant tree species, they are often planted along the banks of ponds, lakes and rivers. They take root fast, change color, and reach exquisite heights.
❦ Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) – A classic swamp staple, this tree can easily survive standing or floodwaters. Although a water-tolerant species, it also does quite well in yards and landscaping.
❦ Red Maple (Acer rubrum) – Unexpectedly, but quite astonishingly, these trees can withstand floodwaters well. Best of all, they can grow in both dry and wet soil conditions.
Need a Dead or Fallen Tree Removed?
With a lot of rain comes standing water, which in turn can damage vulnerable or weakened trees. If floodwaters have caused a tree to drown or topple over on your property, contact a licensed tree removal professional as soon as possible. They can also provide further assessment to ensure no other trees are at risk of falling.
